Todays Achievement
I have to say today I saw how knowing about children's literature pays off, and would like to say a special thanks to Patty Pickard for familiarizing me with all different types of children literature. Today during S.S.R. (silent sustained reading) one of our students finished his book and couldn't find something else to read. He turned down all the suggestions of his classroom teacher. After hearing about the last book he read and what types of books he was interested in I was able to find him a new book to read (one of the Time Warp Trio books). I was so excited when he told me that he was enjoying the book. I just wanted to share this moment with my fellow bloggers and recommend that you keep up to date on children's literature, I know I am always amazed at the new material out there.

Wow! Good for you! I think that it is a great idea to get children interested in reading. Like you mentioned, you were able to find a subject that he was intrested in. I think that this is the most important..finding something that children like to read. Many times students are told what to read, either text books or required reading. I think this is one of the reasons many children do not find reading intresting. They need to read things that will get them to get involved.
I too, took Pickard's class and she really opened up my eyes to children's books. Like you said, keep up to date. I think that this means for the good and the bad. We examined many children's books that would not be suitable for children. So i think that it is imporant to know what is out there and keep your eyes open.
Do you have a favorite children's book? Did Patty get you more interested in this type of literature?
Tina: I have many favorite children's books, largely because I was such a book worm as a kid. Here are some off of my top ten (in no particular order):
1. The Anne of Green Gables series
2. Saddles for Breakfast (this one is no longer in print, it was my mom's favorite and she past the book down to me)
3. Sabine and Griffen an Extrodinary Correspondence (this book is for late middle school to high school)
4. Gina Farina and the Prince of Minsk (I think I might have mispelled Minsk)
and 5. The Places You Can Go by Dr. Seuss.
Patty really expanded my interpretation of children's literature, as well as my library. For the bibliography we had to do I did Girl Power, books that would impower young girls. I was excited to find many girl heros that took charge in literature, like the Paper Bag Princess :)
Thank you for asking about my intrests, what about you...what is your some of your favorite children's books? What types of literature did you become interested in?
Hi Anna:
I loved taking Patty Pickard's children's literature course, and it has been a great research for me as well. I think it is imparative that we stay up to date as teachers on what is out there in children's literature.
I am so happy for your moment of satisfaction of knowing what to do about finding the perfect book for this particular student to read. What a great accomplishment.
Reading was my absolute favorite activity growing up! I loved when teachers would recommend books for me. Reading about your recommendation made me smile because you were able to listen to the student's interests and select a book especially for him. As a teacher, being able to help each student individually is so important!
I, unfortunately, did not have the opportunity to take Children's Literature with Patty Pickard. I had an adjunct professor who is no longer with the college. We should talk to see how the classes were different!
I love collecting children's books - I should take a picture of my collection and show you sometime. I wanted to start growing my own classroom library early.. even though I do not know what grade I will be teaching, I primarily collect 3rd-5th grade appropriate materials. I go tag sales and take hand-me-downs from other people. I am trying to build my collection so that I will not be financially strapped later on!
