- In readers circle I have listened as the students respond to texts that have been read to them through guided discussion,
- Students also ask questions and use a dictionary or thesaurus to clarify misunderstandings or to reach a better understanding,
- For writing I have observed students responding to what they have read and make flow charts and,
- Students also during writing workshop write drafts that they have the teacher proof read; students aslo use dictionarys to check spelling.

Response to Reading and writing processes - 2/7/08

I was wondering if your classroom has a word wall for your students. If not where are the voccabulary words comming from? Do they pick them from the books they use and than use these words in the writing workshops you have observed?

It seems to me that your classroom is a lot more involved in reading and responding, than my classroom is. When the children read it is mostly for leisure. They are able to pick what books that want to read, and that is what they have until they are finished. My teacher is reading a chapter book to them, but the children do not have to write any type of response to it.
Also, I was curious about the writing workshops in your class. Do the children continue to work on the piece after it is proof read by the teacher? In my classroom they are usually working on the same piece for a while. They have many stages (p. 103) that they have to do.
I really like the idea of te readers circle with guided discussion. Did you enjoy it and do you think that it was enjoyable and helpful for the children?

Our classrooms have very similar reading and writing processes; perhaps many of the other teachers at Morley Elementary employ similar methods as well. Based on discussion in class, I feel as though every school functions differently and promotes certain techniques and strategies over others. Even Tina's post suggests that her school is completely different than ours. I would like to have the opportunity to observe at other schools to witness similarities and differences. I wonder how student teaching will be different from our current placements!
